Drone Schools in Hawaii

I’m happy to say there are now multiple options for drone school in Hawaii. There is Hawaii Drone Academy which has offices on Oahu, Maui, and the Big Island.

This is a 3-day introductory workshop with a focus on the “knowledge an organization needs to safely and legally integrate UAS operations into their daily work objectives”.

The Federal Aviation Administration has granted a Certificate of Authorization to researchers at the University of Hawaii at Hilo for the use of an unmanned aircraft to assess wiliwili trees on the Big Island. In addition, students and faculty there and at Hawai’i Community College are using an unmanned aerial vehicle to survey the active Kilauea lava flow on the Big Island.

Also, the Institute for Unmanned Technologies has announced it will soon offer hands-on drone training, education and consulting at their facility in Kapolei.

Please check back for more information about UAV classes in the Aloha State as I receive it.

    1. Hi Gary,

Certification is topic that might need clarification. As of right now, the FAA is still working out the details on regulations governing UAVs, but it appears the proposed rules would require little more than an operator’s “certificate”, at least for small drones. Think of it as a kind of driver’s license for UAVs, with a similar kind of testing process. It is believed that applicants for a small drone operator’s certificate would simply have to pass a written knowledge test covering basic aeronautical information such as radio communications, emergency procedures and airspace classification.

Anyway, the point is that no school at present can offer you FAA-approved UAV certification, because these standards have not yet been established. At this time, a school can only offer you either a degree, or what is basically a certificate of completion, that says you completed courses in a particular field of study.

  1. Hi. I am just getting started. How do I get my Faa certification and what information do I study? And with the certificate can I use it for business purposes. Thank you
