I’m happy to say there are now multiple options for drone school in Hawaii. There is Hawaii Drone Academy which has offices on Oahu, Maui, and the Big Island.
In addition, the University of Hawai’i (Hilo) offers the course, “Intro to Unmanned Aircraft Systems for Remote Sensing and Resource Management” under its College of Continuing Education and Community Service (CCECS).
This is a 3-day introductory workshop with a focus on the “knowledge an organization needs to safely and legally integrate UAS operations into their daily work objectives”.
The Federal Aviation Administration has granted a Certificate of Authorization to researchers at the University of Hawaii at Hilo for the use of an unmanned aircraft to assess wiliwili trees on the Big Island. In addition, students and faculty there and at Hawai’i Community College are using an unmanned aerial vehicle to survey the active Kilauea lava flow on the Big Island.
Also, the Institute for Unmanned Technologies has announced it will soon offer hands-on drone training, education and consulting at their facility in Kapolei.
Please check back for more information about UAV classes in the Aloha State as I receive it.
